Russ Morris. 2011-2012 Through the Viewfinder Portfolio.
I got sucked into this TtV thing right around mid-2006. There were a few dozen of us in the Flickr TtV group and everyone was really excited. Lots of info sharing, experimentation, and discoveries. This excitement carries on today with over 7,000 group members.
I’ve said in the past that I think TtV’s charm is rooted in nostalgia. The mix of old camera/new camera is a neat twist, too. Now, after all these years of shooting this way, I realize that it’s also about surprise, confusion, with a little mischief thrown in.
When I’m stopped and asked about what I’m up to, my assurances of propriety are met with skepticism. I’m not hiding anything, but the act of sticking that camera down the trap really makes people think they’re being spied on… or that I’m the goofiest sucker on the face of the planet.
Then there’s the photos. In my case it’s flowers, cars, people, and stuff that catches my attention. When I mix those subjects with color, the square format, and my slightly twisted sense of humor, I end up with this portfolio >>
